2009 Member Employment Situation Survey

The IABC has been running a survey on employment trends amongst IABC members over 2009. It appears that the percentage of members out of employment is still rising. In March 2009 when the survey began, 10.92% of respondents reported they had lost their job over the last 12 months. In June, the number rose to 14.29% and the most recent result from September shows a worrying leap to 26.54%.

Whilst the results are likely cumulative and based on differing samples, they still provide an indication of just how tough it is at the moment for professional communicators.

To support our members, Gloria Walker has started an informal networking group in London to provide encouragement, information and connections for people currently searching for a new position. The first meeting will be held on 3 November. View the events calendar for more details.

Also, we encourage members to register their CV on our jobs board at

  1. As an interim consultant for the past 7 years, I can confirm that it’s the toughest market I’ve known. This is where our IABC membership, our last role, and professional relationships are so important. Keep networking, and don’t lose hope, but in the meantime, find a way to live more frugally whilst you’re updating your skills.
