One of the beauties of communication is the clarity it can bring. Turning complex ideas into clear, accessible stories; stories that somehow resonate, raise an emotion. As communications professionals we are masters at creating this beautiful simplicity on business topics. Yet, when it comes to our own interests, finding that clear voice can suddenly become much harder.
When did you last communicate about your career with the same level of clarity that you would a business strategy? Are your goals, your aspirations, clear enough to be turned into a compelling vision?
Does having a clear “career vision” even matter? In strategy communication I see again and again, clarity breeds confidence: the belief that we can actually achieve our goals – be it business or personal – effect change, have a real impact.
In a recent workshop we hosted in our business, one participant noted “the clearer you can communicate what you want out of your career, the more productively you will contribute to your company”. It can be a win-win, as individuals gain confidence in pursuing their personal aspirations, they will help drive business.
Can we – as a profession – employ the clarity that we know communication can bring and apply it to our careers to benefit our teams, ourselves, and our companies?
