To adapt or not to adapt? Exploring the ‘culture’ factor in cross-cultural communication

Ever since Hofstede’s influential book ‘Culture’s Consequences’ put cultural differences on the business map, practitioners working internationally have been advised that communication success depends on understanding and adapting to the cultural values and communication preferences of the societies in which they operate and the audiences they communicate with. At the same time, others have argued that in today’s world of multinational corporations, universal best practices and excellence frameworks must take priority over local cultures.
Cultural differences do exist and they do influence the way we communicate, but which cultural differences matter? And, is adapting to them always the right strategy? In organisational practice, how do you adapt without compromising the integrity of your brand’s core message and values? In interpersonal communication how do you change your communication style without losing the authentic sense of who you are?

With 25 years experience as a communication practitioner and consultant, working internationally for companies such as Pfizer, RWE, Compaq, Harrods, BAE Systems and Microsoft, she specialises in leadership communication, employee engagement and culture change across boundaries and in evaluating the effectiveness of such communication for delivering business results. An experienced facilitator and trainer, Domna designs and delivers executive workshops in Intercultural and Leadership Communication for international managers, as well as courses in Communicating Culture and Employee Engagement for communication practitioners (the latter on behalf of the IoIC). Domna has a PhD in Culture and Communication from Cranfield School of Management. She teaches Intercultural Communication for Business and the Professions at Warwick University and is a tutor on the IoIC’s MA in Internal Communication Management.
