Interview with Kiana Linckens

Kiana Linckens with Monique Zytnik and Göktürk DemirelThe IABC EMENA’s social media intern for 2023/24, Kiana Linckens, tells us a bit about what the past year has been like for her in terms of professional experience and personal achievement.

What have you been doing for IABC EMENA?
I’ve been creating content for IABC EMENA’s social media channels, engaging with our community, and making sure we’re keeping our members up to date with our offerings – including Podcasts, Online Connects, and City Connects.

What have you most enjoyed?
My favourite part has been working with the Board. Maybe it’s corny to say my favourite part of this job has been the people, but it really has. In Barcelona, I got to work alongside Karen Matthews which was such an enjoyable weekly ritual, and then in May I got to attend Monique Zytnik’s book launch in Brussels and the EACD event, which allowed me to network and meet many new and inspiring people. I’ve felt such support and care from the IABC EMENA Board, they’ve been a joy to work alongside – the amount of time and energy everyone puts in is something worth appreciating!

What was the most challenging aspect of the internship?
Freelance things, like creating my own work schedule, and keeping track of my hours – it took a while to adjust to this freedom. I now know without a shadow of a doubt that working from home is not something that works for me – I need libraries, or cafes, or anywhere in the absence of my pantry, and beckoning domestic chores.

What will you be doing next and how has the internship helped for your next career steps?
I’ll soon be returning home to Australia after a year of studying, working, and gallivanting through Europe. This internship has allowed me to feel more comfortable working with a large group of individuals. I used to feel very anxious speaking in public, even over Zoom, but through practice and gentle exposure, I now feel confident presenting at meetings, and making myself heard.

As a young person, coming into a professional setting can feel intimidating and it’s easy to de-value your thoughts and opinions, and not take initiative to approach tasks in a way that works for you, but being part of the IABC EMENA team has felt so safe and encouraging, and I’m excited to take this confidence into my future professional endeavours.
